I. Parts
of the Newspaper
A. Group
Activity:
The students will work in groups of four. Each group will be handed a newspaper
and they must label the parts of the newspaper that corresponds with their
vocabulary.
B. Vocabulary:
The student will define a set of
vocabulary words pertaining to newspapers.
Vocabulary Words:
1. Index
2. Headline
3. Dateline
4. News Article
5. Feature Article
6. Editor
7. Editorial
II. Make
Connections between Passages
A. Deciphering
the Article:
The teacher will read samples of articles.
With each article, the students (as a class) will point out linkages
between paragraphs, cause/effect relationships, subheads, and more.
B. What's
the Picture for:
The teacher will point out photos, diagrams, charts, or tables in the samples
of articles and the class will discuss how the graphics and captions support
the article.
A. What
Makes a Good Article:
-The students will practice with
headline writing by playing a series of interactive challenges online that will
help students understand how good news headlines and comments should be
written.
B. Practice
Makes Permanent:
-The teacher will show the class a few headlines and help analyze which ones
are good or bad.
A. Investigate:
-The students will find an article on the website. Once they find an article that they like, the
student will present their article to the class and answer the following
questions: What made the article appealing you; What is the purpose of the
article, and can you point out any linkages between paragraphs, cause/effect
relationships, subheads, or conclusions.
B. Why
that Article:
-The students will look at some articles and choose one to write a paragraph
on what they learned from that article.
V. Writing
an Article
A. Constructing
a Newspaper:
-The students will type and edit their articles and work together to make a
class newspaper.
B. Making
Your Own Article:
-The students will work in groups of four.
Each group will be given a different newspaper headline such as sports,
advertisement, etc... and will write an article pertain their headline.
Teaching kids how to read newspapers is a great topic because they probably have never really read a newspaper before at this age. I also really like your concept map!

ReplyDeleteThis is very unique! It is a great to introduce and teach informational text while having that real-life connection. It will help meet the CCSS you chose as well as educate them with what is happening in the world by sparking an interest in reading the newspaper. Great job!!

ReplyDeleteYour concept map is cute! I like how you are using newspapers. I love newspapers! I like your activities, especially the one that has the students create their own headline. I also like how you are putting all of their individual articles together into a class newspaper. Your students will have a lot of fun with this and be able to take pride in their writing as they show it off to their parents or other teachers.
ReplyDeletePeople these days just aren't reading newspapers like they used to so I think this is a great activity to introduce this to your third graders.
ReplyDeleteVery cute name of your concept map. Bellringers are smart to do, good thinking. The activity for them to do headlines is very good because I honestly struggled with that in school and I think that actually working with headlines will help them.
ReplyDeleteI think this is a very creative lesson. Most kids don't understand the way that a newspaper is set up anymore. I thought this was a very engaging lesson. I really liked all of your activities!!
ReplyDeleteUsing everyday newspaper is a great way to have them keep up with what is going on in the world and have them see what it is used for. It is one of the best ways to see cause and effects and how the pictures go along with the article.
ReplyDeleteWe tend to forget about the newspaper now days so I love the fact that you incorporated it into your lesson! The labeling of the vocab words is a very good technique to teach that lesson. The making of an article is a great conclusion!

ReplyDeleteThis seems really well put together. Numbering your topics was really smart and just makes things more organized. The group work with the different topics allows all the students to work together to come together as a class.
ReplyDeleteI love the organization of your concept map. Some of the boxes are a little lengthy for a concept map. Using a newspaper is a creative lesson for your goal. You could integrate writing your own article with technology by doing it online and learning how to create documents and edit each others stuff. Good job!

ReplyDeleteThis is one of the best lesson plans yet. I love the concept map, it was so thought out and organized. It is good enough that you could give them a copy as their directions. The newspaper makes them aware of what is going on in real life. Great Job!!!
